Best Garbage Disposal Faq

Sandra asks…

What’s the best brand garbage disposal, recommended HP, and how much would a good one cost?

Thanks!

Garbage Disposal Staff Says:

Get a “insinkerator” from home depot a 1/2 hp will work fine – they are built to last and are very easy to install no wiring – about $75.00

Richard asks…

What is the best way to clean a garbage disposal (see details)?

My garbage disposal drain smells horrible. No matter what I try it still smells funny. I’ve tried putting bleach down the drain and letting it set (well, as best as it can…I realize it’s a liquid and most goes down the drain). What techniques do you use?

Garbage Disposal Staff Says:

Jo,
first, you need to change the rubber piece.
Then, you want to sharpen the blades by running
ice cubes with a little help of cold water.
Then cut lemons or limes in two and throw them in the grinder
and finally, get a large box of baking soda,
pour it all,
pour a cup of distilled white vinegar
and let it sit overnight. It will bubble and sizzle, that’s OK.

Next morning,
run hot water for about 1 minute,
and presto,
a clean smelling garbage disposal.

Do the ice once a week,
the lemon, lime, every time you can
the baking soda/vinegar at least twice a month.

And always run the full cycle, grind longer than you think
is necessary.
Try it and let me know if it works!

Thomas asks…

What’s the best way to clean garbage disposal?

and what common items should not be thrown in it. My tennants keep breaking the disposal and I already told them I’d replace it when maybe I shouldn’t bother. What tips should I give them for proper use??
Is it true ice is good?

Garbage Disposal Staff Says:

When I clean my disposer, I cut 1 slice of lemon and drop it in the
disposer.Next add 2 tablespoons of baking soda, slowly turn on cold
water and turn on disposer to grind mixture.
