Buy Garbage Disposal Parts Faq

Donald asks…
My garbage disposal needs to be replaced – how do I do it?
where do I buy the parts I need? What tools am I going to need?
Garbage Disposal Staff Says:
If you replace it with the same type it will be very easy. Turn off the power, disconnect the wiring, disconnect the drain line and dishwasher line. At the top of the g/d is a ring that will turn about a 1/4 turn counter clockwise and the g/d will drop, so make sure you have a good grip on it. Installation is in the reverse but be sure to remove the knockout where the dishwasher connection is if you have a dishwasher, otherwise the d/w won’t drain. Tools needs are usually a large pair of channelocks to remove the drain, screwdriver or 5/16 nut driver to remove the dishwasher connections, straight or Phillips screwdriver for the electrical connections, hammer and drift punch or something similar to remove the knockout for the dishwasher if needed to remove. If your drain pipes are metal you probably will need to replace them as often they are rusted but don’t show until you try to remove them. A hack saw might be needed to cut the drain lines or the stub that comes out of the garbage disposal.

William asks…
Is my garbage disposal completely borked?
Recently, I flipped on my in-sink garbage disposal after tipping a small amount of carrot peelings in it. It ground fiercely for a second, then sputtered out. When I flipped the switch again, the first time it just sort of sputtered, and now there is no response. I know there was no metal or anything in there.
My question is, what are the chances that this is something I could fix myself with the right part? I’m not going to take anything apart and wreck it further, but I’d like to know if this could be fixed without calling a plumber and getting a huge bill, although I suspect we’re going to have to anyway.
The disposal was here when my husband bought the house 5 years ago, and the letters around the drain say “Insinkerator ISE Disposal“. Any help is appreciated.
Garbage Disposal Staff Says:
Two things. First, there should be a small round hole in the bottom of the disposal. If you can find the tool that came with the disposal, use it otherwise try different size hex wrenches until you find one that fits. Insert the tool and turn it back and forth until it turns easily. If it won’t turn at all the disposal is toast. If it does, look for a small red “reset” button on the body of the disposal and press it to reset the breaker. If that doesn’t work, check house breaker that feeds the disposal. If it still doesn’t work, again it is toast.

Susan asks…
Installing a dishwasher- adding piece under sink for drain- how?
We’re in the process of installing a dishwasher. We’ve got everything except the drain line hooked up. Their was a prexisting water line & electrical outlet. The pipes were replaced before we bought the house so no pre-existing drain or garbage disposal.
We bought a pipe from home depot that will has a nipple that we can attach the drain to.
The piece is 1 1/2″ and we need to outfit it onto 2″ black pvc pipes. There is no room between the p-trap and the sink on the right. No room to drop the p-trap closer to the floor.
The sink on the left has an 90 degree elbow pipe that fits onto the long part of a T pipe from the right sink. Below the T pipe is the P-trap. We’re attempting to add the piece we’ve purchased into the long area of the T pipe. We’re having trouble finding couplers that are 1 1/2″ to 2″.
Should we go about installing this piece another way? Any suggestions? We’re stumped. We really do not want to install a garbage disposal, or call a plumber.
Thanks!

The real problem today is any contractor thinking he can do plumbing NEVER tie anything in after the trap it will let sewer gases back in your house
you need to tie your dishwasher in right above the tee you talked about the piece you need will look just like the one that is there now except it will have a 3/4″ pipe sticking out on the side of it. Any problems call me on my office cell phone
