Buy Garbage Disposal Unit Faq

Sandra asks…

How to fix a garbage disposal that hums then clicks. Can’t find place where allen wrench goes either.?

Bought my home a year and a half ago and just realized the big thing underneath my sink was a garbage disposal unit (yes I am aware that I’m not very handy, but I do try). The only reason why I figured it out b/c my double sink started to clog on one side and I ended up cleaning it out. Long story short…I hit the reset button on my disposal unit and it would just hum then click forcing me to restart my breaker every time. I looked for the place to use an allen wrench, however I can’t find it at all. It’s not on the bottom of the unit and used a flashlight and mirror to look all around but could not find a place to use it. I tried using a broom through the top, however I’m not sure where or how I hard I should be banging that thing around without forcing it loose.

The unit is a GE Disposall GFC410-02. I can’t find the manual anywhere online. Should I just buy a new one and if so is it possible to buy one and get installed by a professional for $200-$300?

Helen asks…

Minimum pipe size for garbage disposals?

I’m renovating my kitchen, and I want to add a garbage disposal. My neighbor told me that the homes in our neighborhood weren’t built with large enough pipes to accomodate garbage disposal use. I’m assuming he is talking about the drainage pipe. I already bought a disposal and I’m planning on putting it in today. Does anybody know what size pipes you have to have to accomodate a garbage disposal? Also, I bought a 3/4 hp disposal…could somebody tell me the main advantage of this over a 1/2 or 1/3 hp unit?

Garbage Disposal Staff Says:

Minimum trap size is 1 1/2″ if you have a dish washer also ? I would recomend 2″ trap if you have anything besides public sewer the disposal is not recomended….. More horse power can chop bigger stuff easier…….. Dont put any thing that is stringy….celery …plant stems……. !! Chicken bones will sharpen the blades

Mark asks…

Sink garbage disposal not working?

The motor is running because it hums but the blades do not move it was here when I bought the house so I do not know how old it is, anyhow is it cheaper to have it fixed or replace the whole unit?
The blades do move freely but nothing happens.

Garbage Disposal Staff Says:

If the allen wrench doesn’t work or you don’t have an allen wrench to try to unjam the disposal, take a long screwdriver or broom stick and stick it in the disposal from above (disposal turned off). Push the broomstick back and forth to try to move the blades. You should be able to get them to spin freely eventually. Once they are free, reach under the disposal and find the reset button and push it in. Now try your disposal and see if it is working. Hope this fixes your problem without you having to replace the disposal.
