Garbage Disposal Repair Faq

Robert asks…

How do I repair a garbage disposal with no hex screw release under it?

All that I can find on the bottom of the unit is a nut, but it’s off to the side closer to the rim of the unit. Do I just have one of those that can’t be repaired?

Garbage Disposal Staff Says:

Grab an old wooden broom handle and stick it into the garbage disposal hole in the sink. Use it to manually turn the motor. With the motor off of course. Push the red overload button to reset it. After removing the broom handle try turning it on. This in effect does the same thing as if you were turning it with the hex wrench underneath.

Jenny asks…

How do I repair a dysfunctional garbage disposal?

This is a tale of woe.

A spoon got jammed up in the garbage disposal and now it does not run at all. Little bits of food get washed down the drain and the sink is slow as molasses.

Garbage Disposal Staff Says:

First try the reset button. It’s usually red and on the bottom.

If not:
Most are universal.
Just buy a new one. The old one will twist off of its mount and the new one will twist on. Couldn’t be easier.
