Insinkerator Garbage Disposal Faq

Charles asks…
Insinkerator sounds like a metal bolt is flying around inside…?
My garbage disposal stopped working recently. My dad told me to take an Allen Wrench & turn the blades from underneath the Insinkerator which I did, and it loosened everything up just fine… but now, when I turn on the garbage disposal, it sounds like there’s a big metal something flying around inside… it sounds pretty awful. I am guessing I need to take it apart & look in there, but I’m not sure how, or if I need to turn off any water supply, etc. Could someone please give me their thoughts on this, and/or instructions on how to properly take it apart? It’s an Insinkerator Badger 1. Thank you!
I should add that when I reach my hand into the garbage disposal, the “drain” holes are tiny… and whatever sounds like it’s flying around in the unit underneath sounds too big to have been able to fall into the sink & end up down there. If you could be REALLY specific with regard to what you mean when you say “disconnect the plumbing” and “disconnect the electric”…. I really want to make sure that is done right, and I’m not guessing at what to do! Thank you!!

A blade probably broke and is being turned around by the other blades. You will have to take the unit out and disassemble it. Not a easy job. Good luck

Thomas asks…
I need help with my In Sink Erator (insinkerator?) Badger 1!?
Hello…. our garbage disposal (model #1-81, S/N 72019236) doesn’t seem to be working correctly. It is about 8 years old. When I turn it on, I hear the motor but the blades are not spinning. After about 5 seconds, it shuts off and I have to press the reset button. Has anyone had this problem before? How can I fix it? Thanks!
Garbage Disposal Staff Says:
Sounds like something is stuck in the blades and keeping them from turning. TURN OFF THE POWER to the disposal. Put your hand down inside the disposal and see if you can feel what’s stuck. If you have the manual read it. It will explain how to unstuck it.

444-5 InSinkErator Problams?
So, I called the company and they sent me the correct allen wrench to take this apart. I was cleaning my old fish rocks to get rid of and some got deep down in the disposal. They are in the part under the sink. Other than just using a Garbage Disposal, this would be the first time I’ve ever gotton down and dirty with them. I just need some help on what I should do to get the rocks out. To further chat, please add me at butters54_us@live.com. Thanks.
Garbage Disposal Staff Says:
Steve is correct you have to remove the disposal & turn it up side down & rotate the blades with the allen wrench. The allen wrench is used only to rotate the blades & unjam to disposal, not take it apart. Keep that allen wrench in a safe handy place. That is a very valuable tool.
