Kitchenaid Garbage Disposal Faq

Ken asks…
Kitchenaid Garbage Disposal Model KCDB250G3 humming?
I have a Kitchenaid garbage disposal Model KCDB250G3 which I bought just over a year ago and I have been having problems with it for the past 4 months. It seems that if it is not used on a frequent basis, once a week when I try to use it, I get a humming sound. I unplug it, use the allen wrenchette to spin the motor free after clearing any obstructions and can usually get it to work. Not always does the reset button pop out but when it does, I do press it to reset it.
The last time it locked up, about a month ago, it took longer than normal to free it up and only ended up freely spinning and working on it for awhile. Although it did work, it sounded like it had a higher pitch whining sound coming from the metal inside. Now, after I came back from vacation last week, I have the problem again and cannot get it to move. I have tried all of the usual troubleshooting tips that I am familiar with but still have not had any success. Of course, I purchased it 3/10/10 so the one year warranty is up…my fault for not jumping on that sooner.
Any ideas?
Garbage Disposal Staff Says:
It sounds like you have a disposal issue. If you were putting things down it and it stopped spinning due to obstructions then you are doing the right thing to get it running. You might just have a motor that doesn’t want to spin and disposal replacement might be your only option at this point. You might try removing it and looking for something that is in there that occasionally jams it, however I doubt that is the case.

Paul asks…
installing a new kitchen sink. The drain opening and garbage disposal drain collar don’t match.?
The drain opening in the new sink is 5″, but the collar for the garbage disposal is 4-1/2″. Because the drain opening is sloped, I don’t think I will be abale to seal the drain, even with the plumber’s putty. Are any sort of adapters available? It is a kitchenaid garbage disposal and a Kohler sink.
Garbage Disposal Staff Says:
If you can’t figure out a good solution go back where you bought your sink and ask questions. A standard disposal should be able to fit. With a sloped drain opening your plumbing might be interesting underneath.

Charles asks…
My garbage disposal (KitchenAid) seems to be jammed. It hums when turned on but the blades don’t turn…help.
Garbage Disposal Staff Says:
Did it come with a tool for the machine part that’s under your sink? Some come with a doo-hickey that you use when its jammed (you can tell i’m a professional at this huh??)
otherwise you might take a wooden spoon or something and try to move the blade a bit (with the disposal turned OFF). Sometimes you just need to loosen it up a bit.
